AES Filing Worksheet

US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) must receive the required documentation at least 72 hours before export before importing a vehicle to Canada from the U.S.

But there’s another step our auto importers take before sending your documentation to the CBP. A new export filing requirement has been added to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Automated Export System (AES). The AES must be filed before the 72-hour notice. To file the AES, the seller must supply an EIN or IRS or Duns Number and this worksheet.

The U.S. Census Bureau published a final rule amending its regulations on March 14, 2013, to require new export reporting requirements. This final rule was originally scheduled to take effect on January 8, 2014, and took effect on April 5, 2014.

New Requirements For Used Self-Propelled Vehicles:

These are some of the new requirements for self-propelled vehicles:

    • No matter how much the vehicle is worth or where it is going, it must be filed with the AES
    • The vehicle must be filed 72 hours before export

What Is The Automated Export System (AES)?

The Automated Export System (AES) is a computer system that gathers Electronic Export Information (EEI). This is the primary instrument used for collecting data on export trade, which is used by the United States Census Bureau for statistical purposes only, and by other federal agencies to enforce U.S. export laws and regulations.

What Is Considered A Self-Propelled Vehicle?

According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), self-propelled vehicles include any automobile, tractor, bus, motorcycle, truck, motor home, self-propelled construction equipment, self-propelled agricultural machinery, self-propelled special use equipment, and any other self-propelled vehicle designed or used for running on land and not rail.

    Impact On Canada Car Shipping:

Every Canada car importer in Canada must file export information through the Automated Export System (AES) and accompanying electronic information to CBP 72 hours before the car arrives at the border as of April 5, 2014. On behalf of CBP, the Census Bureau may impose very severe penalties on non-compliance with this mandatory AES filing.

Bidbuy Importers can handle these filings on your behalf. Get in touch with us to learn how we can help you meet your AES obligations.

    What’s next?

After the AES has been accepted, an Internal Transaction Number (ITN) will be issued. This ITN number must accompany a 72-hour export notice request with U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
